The History

Historically Speaking....

The First and Second Cookouts occurred in 1993 and 1994 at the home of Albert Hall (Prence Jerreau), a fraternity brother from Clark University. At this time, the cookout was mainly a single day event. At both events we had one GSS in attendance and each had about 20 brothers, and a host of friends and family.

The Third Cookout took place at Piedmont Park in mid-town in 1995. We had the fewest number of people to attend the event. But still ate ourselves silly. We had about 16 brothers there, and no sorors or phyettes, and no friends. Only one family member came with her children. We held the cookout out under a tree.

The Fourth Cookout was in 1996 and was an experiment. The 1996 Cookout was actually on Memorial Day at Grant Park. The park was fill with people but the brothers and sisters didn't show up in big numbers. But there was big fun. Volleyball, Food and a Free Concert by Parliament / Funkadelic. We had so much food that we were giving it away. Again we had a low turn out. About 10 brothers, attended but a several friends and family were in attendance there were about 30 people at our cookout.

The Fifth Cookout was in 1997 and was the first time the Cookout went National to all '25/'52 family chapters. The Cookout occured the weekend after Memorial Day and was located back at Piedmont Park. We had about 45 people there. About 25-30 brothers from the city came. We also had 3 sorors from Texas, one soror from Louisiana, and a brother came from Tennessee and one soror from the city. There was also a Phyette in attendace. A second activity was added. The All-nighter was added by accident. Everybody stay up until about 6:30am before the Day of the Cookout. Everybody who came from out of town was given gifts.

At the Sixth Cookout we were in full blast. In 1998, again on the weekend after Memorial Day, we had a number of events. The main events that were slated to take place were as follows: On Friday, All-nighter Houseparty. On Saturday, we had the Annual Cookout. We added, a Step Contest during the Cookout and nobody was prepared for the contest. So we gave everybody a about thirty minutes to practice. We were suppose to go out to party that night but everybody stayed in and that gave them time to recover from Cookout . On Sunday, we went to Church at Atlanta Metropolitan Church, (suggested by a Morgan State University GSS soror), Shopping at Underground Atlanta, and the Sunset Pool Party that occurred later that evening! There were about 35 sorors and 125 brothers in attendance

The Seventh Cookout was a thursday through sunday affair because of the Atlanta Gamma Sigma Sigma Convention. This was also the year that the brothers started their Atlanta Alumni Association. In 1999, the next weekend after July 4th, it all started Thursday the 8th, with Comedy at Chris Tuckers Comedy Club then everyone went to the All-Nighter House Party. Community Service Day 99, was in Woodruff Park on Friday. With this event we were able to feed the homeless right in downtown Atlanta. We celebrated, with a party at Club Esso later that night. Saturday was the Cookout at Coen Park and during the cookout we had the Step Show. And later that night, we got wet at the Sunset Pool Party. Off the schedule was an impromptu after party. On slate for sunday was Church Services, and that afternoon for the final event was a Sunday Formal Brunch. Publix and Kroger helped to sponsor us. There were about 115 sorors and 110 brothers in attendance. There were also some Phyettes there.

The Eight Cookout also began on thursday July 6th 2000. Brothers and sisters came down on thursday and hung out. Friday the Service project in Woodruff park really took an upswing with a live broadcast on radio station V103. We again fed the homeless and received donations from several vendors. Publix and Kroger helped to sponsor us and we received dontations from Juston's as well. We celebrated, with a party ( The All-nighter ) at the Atlanta International Golf Course Club House later that night. Saturday was the Cookout at Grant Park and during the cookout we had the Step Show Contest between the family chapters. And later that night, we got wet at the Sunset Pool Party however we were only able to go from 7:00 to 10:00pm. And on sunday we met at Shoney's Resteraunt. There were about 95 sorors and 110 brothers in attendance.

The Ninth Cookout started on thursday July 12th 2001. We met at a bowling alley, and had some fun getting the food prepared for the Friday service project. And on Friday we again successfully conducted the feed the homeless service project. This was the first year we attempted to host a blood drive. We collected 40 pints of very needed blood. Our goal was 30. That night we partied at the top floor of the hotel. Saturday was the Cookout at Coen Park and during the cookout we had the Step Show and a Stroll competition. And later that night, we got had fun at the Sunset Pool Party. Sunday we met at Shoney's Resteraunt. There were about 130 sorors and 125 brothers in attendance.

The Tenth Cookout started on thursday July 11th 2002. We hung out at the ESPN Zone. Of course, some of went to Danica's house and help with preparing the food for the service project on Friday. And on Friday we again successfully conducted the feed the homeless service project. After the Service Project some people went to Dugans. The friday Night Party was at the hotel. Saturday was the Cookout at Washington Park. During the cookout we had the Step Show and a Stroll competition. And later that night, we got had fun at the Sunset Pool Party. Sunday we met at The Reflections Resteraunt in the hotel. There were about 135 sorors and 115 brothers in attendance. And we had about 8 Jewels and a few Phyettes.

The Eleventh Cookout started on thursday July 24th 2003. For situations that happened at previous cookout weekends, the Atlanta Alumni Association lost it's recognition. However, we still were able to bring our funds together and organize the weekend to have a very nice event, as we did before 1999. We were at the Hyatt Regency Hotel Downtown. On Friday some people went out. Again, Danica was getting the food prepared for the Friday service project. And on Friday we again successfully conducted the feed the homeless service project. Friday night we had the party/Wristband Auction. Saturday was the Cookout back at Coen Park and during the cookout we had the Step Show and a Stroll competition. And later that night, we came back to the hotel to get in the pool. Sunday we met at Shoney's Resteraunt. This was our largest attence yet, there were about 140 sorors, 155 brothers, about 10 jewels and about 6 Phyettes in attendance.

Attendence Estimates are conservative, earlier estimate are much more accurate.
